Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 760 bankruptcies (610 bankruptcies in the same month of the previous year, up 24.6% year-on-year), marking 24 consecutive months of year-on-year increase. This was the first time in three months that the number of bankruptcies fell from the previous month, but it was 150 more bankruptcies than the same month of the previous year, and the number of bankruptcies exceeded 700 for the first time in four years for April.
- ■The total amount of liabilities came to 94,600 million yen (208,807 million yen in the same month of the previous year, down 54.7%), marking the second consecutive month of year-on-year decrease. The highest amount of liabilities was 3,600 million yen for Kawagoe Construction Materials Industry Co., Ltd., which was engaged in civil engineering works.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year-on-year in six of seven industries. In terms of growth rate, the transportation and communication industry (to 39 bankruptcies from 25 in the same month of the previous year, up 56.0%) recorded the highest growth rate, rising by more than 50% from the same month last year for the first time in five months. In the retail industry, bankruptcies of food and beverage retailers (to 26 bankruptcies from 14 in the same month of the previous year) increased significantly.
- ■In terms of primary cause, “recession-induced bankruptcies” numbered 655, marking the 24th consecutive month of year-on-year increase.
- ■By type, there were 713 cases of “bankruptcy,” surpassing the same month of the previous year for 25 consecutive months.
- ■By size of liabilities, bankruptcies of companies with liabilities of “less than 50 million yen” was the most common (437 cases). Capital of “individual + less than 10 million yen” (521 cases) accounted for approximately 70% of the total.
- ■By business history, there were 208 bankruptcies of start-up companies, and this figure marked 26 consecutive months of year-on-year increase.
- ■By region, seven of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases. The largest rate of increase was in Chugoku (to 38 bankruptcies from 25 in the same month last year, up 52.0%), surpassing the same month last year for 16 consecutive months.
