Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 2,938 bankruptcies in the first half of FY2021, going under 3,000 for the first time in 55 years since 1966.
- ■Total liabilities for the first half of FY2021 came to 578,470 million yen, down for the first time in two years from the same period of the previous year.
- ■The largest amount of debt posted by a bankrupt company was about 100,483 million yen, recorded by Tokyo Shoji Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, special liquidation, May).
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in six of seven industries. Among them, the construction industry (512 bankruptcies, down 15.5% year-on-year), the manufacturing industry (324 bankruptcies, down 26.2% year-on-year), the wholesale industry (373 bankruptcies, down 27.4% year-on-year) and the real estate industry (109 bankruptcies, down 11.4% year-on-year) saw the fewest bankruptcies ever on a half-year basis since 2000.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 2,248 (down 28.8% year-on-year), the fewest ever on a half-year basis since 2000.
- ■In terms of liabilities, bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 1,777 (down 28.1% year-on-year). These made up 60.5% of all bankruptcies (down 2.0 points year-on-year), and the trend in which small-scale bankruptcies account for the majority continues.
- ■By region, all regions experienced double-digit year-on-year decreases. In particular, the six regions of Hokkaido (65 bankruptcies, down 31.6% year-on-year), Tohoku (107 bankruptcies, down 37.1% year-on-year), Chubu (405 bankruptcies, down 28.4% year-on-year), Kinki (750 bankruptcies, down 30.1% year-on-year), Chugoku (121 bankruptcies, down 35.6% year-on-year) and Kyushu (225 bankruptcies, down 22.9% year-on-year) saw the fewest on a half-year basis since 2000.
- ■By mode, the number of bankruptcies under the Civil Rehabilitation Act came to 89, going under 100 for the first time since the enforcement of that Act began.
- ■There were 49 bankruptcies caused by a labor shortage (down 24.6% year-on-year), marking the second consecutive year of year-on-year decrease..
- ■There were 218 bankruptcies caused by a difficulty in finding a successor (down 5.2% year-on-year), marking the first year-on-year decrease in four years.
- ■There were 210 post-moratorium bankruptcies (down 20.8% year-on-year), marking the first year-on-year decrease in three years
