Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■The number of bankruptcies in FY2019 came to 8,480 (8,057 bankruptcies in the previous fiscal year, up 5.3% year-on-year), the first time in two years that there has been an increase over the previous fiscal year. The last fiscal year saw the lowest number of bankruptcies in the past 10 years since the financial crisis of 2008.
- ■Total liabilities came to 1,218,789 million yen (1,554,809 million yen in the previous fiscal year, down 21.6% year-on-year), going below the previous fiscal year for the second consecutive year, and marking the smallest amount since FY2000.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year-on-year in five of seven industries. Of them, the number of bankruptcies in the retail industry (1,990 bankruptcies) were up 8.9% year-on-year. The number of bankruptcies of restaurants (784 bankruptcies) marked a record high./li>
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 6,723 (up 5.0% year-on-year). They account for 79.3% (down 0.1 points year-on-year) of all bankruptcies.
- ■In terms of liabilities, bankruptcies of companies with liabilities totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 5,283 (up 6.7% year-on-year). The ratio of these to all bankruptcies has risen for seven consecutive years and at 62.3% (up 0.9 points year-on-year), marking the highest since FY2000.
- ■By region, seven of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases. Among them, the number of bankruptcies in Kanto (3,044 bankruptcies, up 5.1% year-on-year) exceeded the previous fiscal year for the first time in 10 years since FY2009. In Tohoku (426 bankruptcies, up 17.7% year-on-year) the number of bankruptcies increased in all six prefectures of the region.
- ■There were 194 bankruptcies caused by a labor shortage (up 14.8% year-on-year), marking the sixth consecutive year of year-on-year increase.
- ■There were 479 bankruptcies caused by a difficulty in finding a successor (up 14.0% year-on-year), marking the second consecutive year of year-on-year increase.
- ■There were 498 post-moratorium bankruptcies (up 3.8% year-on-year), marking the fourth consecutive year of year-on-year increase.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by AWH Co., Ltd. (formerly Awashima Hotel Co., Ltd. , Shizuoka, bankruptcy), with liabilities of approximately 40,000 million yen.
