Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 4,197 bankruptcies, in the first half of FY2017 (4,059 in the same period of the previous year, up 3.4% year-on-year), marking the first time in eight years (since the first half of FY2009) that the figure exceeded that of the same period of the previous year. Looking at figure by month, there were signs of a change in bankruptcy trends with the number of bankruptcies exceeding that of the same period of the previous year in four out of six months in the first half, including a two-digit increase in May 2017 (784 bankruptcies, up 20.2% year-on-year).
- ■Liabilities totaled 761,818 million yen, the first year-on-year increase in four years.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies exceeded that of the same period of the previous year in four out of seven industries, including the retail and service industries.
- ■There were 54 bankruptcies caused by a labor shortage (32 in the same period of the previous year), significantly up 68.8% year-on-year.
- ■There were 234 post-moratorium bankruptcies (204 in the same period of the previous year), up 14.7% year-on-year.
- ■There were 47 China risk bankruptcies (56 in the same period of the previous year), down 16.1% year-on-year.
- ■By region, six of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases. Among them, bankruptcies in the two regions of Kinki and Shikoku increased by two digits compared with the same period of the previous year, and the number in Tohoku exceeded the same period of the previous year for the second consecutive year.
- ■Looking at the form of bankruptcy, those that were a special liquidation (147 bankruptcies) were significantly up 27.8% from the same period of the previous year.
- ■There was one bankruptcy of a company listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange: Takata Corporation (Civil Rehabilitation Act, June).
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Takata Corporation (Civil Rehabilitation Act, June), with liabilities of 182,633 million yen.
