- ■There were 696 bankruptcies, marking a year-on-year increase of 6.4% and the first increase in two months. Liabilities totaled 156,572 million yen, marking an 8.6% year-on-year decrease and the third consecutive month of such decrease.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year on year in four of seven industries. Of these, the two industries of the wholesale industry (116 bankruptcies, up 11.5% year-on-year) and retail industry (168, up 24.4%) saw double-digit increases year-on-year. In addition, bankruptcies in the real estate industry (21 bankruptcies, up 5.0% year-on-year) exceeded the same month of the previous year for the fourth consecutive month. On the other hand, the two industries of the construction industry (121 bankruptcies, down 5.5% year-on-year) and the manufacturing industry (86, down 14.0%) saw year-on-year decreases.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 566 (up 3.9% year-on-year), higher than the same month of the previous year for the fourth consecutive month. They accounted for 81.3% (down 2.0 points) of all bankruptcies.
- ■In terms of scale, there were 419 bankruptcies with liabilities of less than 50 million yen, marking a year-on-year increase of 13.6%. These made up 60.2% of all bankruptcies, and as ever the trend in which small-scale bankruptcies account for the majority continued. By capitalization, the number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 454, accounting for 65.2% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, five of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases. Among them, bankruptcies in Tohoku (41 bankruptcies, up 51.9% year-on-year) exceeded 40 for the first time in 2 years and 9 months since March 2015 (42 cases), marking the highest number in 2017. Also, bankruptcies in Chubu (115, up 9.5% year-on-year) increased year-on-year for the fourth consecutive month. In the three main prefectures, the number of bankruptcies in Tokyo and Osaka increased from the same month of the previous year for the first time in 2 months, while in Aichi the number increased for the second consecutive month.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was 28,000 million yen, recorded by Otaru Bay City Development Co., Ltd. (Hokkaido, Civil Rehabilitation Act).
