- ■There were 646 bankruptcies, down 16.6% compared with the previous month, and down by 4.2% year-on-year, the first such decrease in three months. Liabilities totaled 134,983 million yen, up 32.4% from the previous month, but down 76.8% year-on-year. This was the second consecutive month that the figure was lower than the same month of the previous year.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in five of seven industries. Among them, the number in the transport and communication industry (18 bankruptcies) decreased substantially by 45.5% year-on-year, marking a double-digit decrease for the second consecutive month. In addition, the manufacturing industry (68 bankruptcies, down 9.3% year-on-year) saw a year-on-year decrease for two consecutive months, marking the lowest figure since 2000. On the other hand, the two industries of the construction industry (141 bankruptcies, up 14.6% year-on-year) and the real estate industry (18 bankruptcies, up 5.9% year-on-year) saw year-on-year increases.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 542 (up 0.2% year-on-year), higher than the same month of the previous year for the third consecutive month. They accounted for 83.9% (up 3.6 points) of all bankruptcies.
- ■Looking at the scale of liabilities, the number of bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen came to 407, down 2.6% from the same month of the previous year. However, these made up 63.0% of all bankruptcies, the second-highest figure seen since 2000, following August 2017 (65.9%). By capitalization, the number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 419, accounting for 64.9% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, four of nine regions experienced year-on-year declines. Of these, three regions including Tohoku, Kanto and Kyushu marked double-digit year-on-year decreases. On the other hand, Chugoku recorded a large increase of 52.4% year-on-year. Chubu also saw a double-digit increase in such bankruptcies, and they exceeded the same month of the previous year in three areas.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Netcard, Inc. (formerly Orient Credit Co., Ltd., Tokyo, bankruptcy) with 59,489 million yen.
