- ■There were 698 bankruptcies, marking a decrease of 7.1% compared with the previous month and slightly down by 1.4% year-on-year, the first such decrease in six months. The number of bankruptcies in July remained in the 600 to 699 range for the first time in 12 years, since July 2005 (675 bankruptcies). Liabilities totaled 102,706 million yen, marking a 19.7% year-on-year decrease, the first fall in two months.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in three industries for the first time in three months. These were the manufacturing industry (86 bankruptcies, down 15.7% year-on-year), the service industry (150 bankruptcies, down 4.5% year-on-year), and the real estate industry (17 bankruptcies, down 26.1% year-on-year).
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 568 (down 1.7% year-on-year), lower than the same month of the previous year for the second consecutive month. They accounted for 81.4% (down 0.2 points year-on-year) of all bankruptcies. There were 12 bankruptcies due to a shortage of labor, and the total for the period from January to July 2017 was 61 cases (up 60.5% compared with the same period of the previous year).
- ■In terms of scale, bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 430 (up 3.9% year-on-year). These made up 61.6% of all bankruptcies, and as ever the trend in which small-scale bankruptcies account for the majority continued. By capitalization, the number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 452, accounting for 64.8% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, the number of bankruptcies fell compared with the same month of the previous year in the three regions of Chubu, Chugoku and Kyushu. This happened for the first time in five months for Chubu and the first time in two months for Chugoku, while it occurred for the second consecutive month for Kyushu. Meanwhile, the three regions of Hokkaido, Tohoku and Kinki saw year-on-year increases. For three regions including Kanto the number of bankruptcies was the same as in the same month of the previous year. It should be noted that the number increased in three prefectures (Tokyo, Osaka and Aichi).
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by YODOSHI CORPORATION (Osaka, Civil Rehabilitation Act) with liabilities of 6,365 million yen.
