Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 807 bankruptcies, marking a year-on-year increase of 9.2% and the second consecutive month of such increase. The number of bankruptcies exceeded 800 for the first time in two years, since March 2015 (847 bankruptcies). Liabilities totaled 169,585 million yen, marking an 8.2% year-on-year increase, the first increase in four months.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year-on-year in five of seven industries. Of these, the three industries of transport and communication (34 bankruptcies, up 30.8% year on year), retail (185, up 19.4%) and service (182, up 14.5%) saw double-digit increases year-on-year. Meanwhile, the two industries of real estate (19 bankruptcies, down 5.0% year on year) and wholesale (134, down 0.7%) fell year on year.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 654, up 6.3% year-on-year, marking the first year-on-year increase in six months. They accounted for 81.0% (down 2.2 points) of all bankruptcies.
- ■In terms of scale, bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 463 (up 16.6% year on year). These made up 57.4% of all bankruptcies, and as ever the trend in which small-scale bankruptcies account for the majority continued. By capitalization, the number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 497, accounting for 61.6% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, five out of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases. The four regions of Hokkaido (30 bankruptcies, up 36.4% year on year), Kanto (324, up 18.2%), Chubu (124, up 17.0%), and Kinki (210, up 13.5%) marked large double-digit year-on-year increases. On the other hand, four regions including Tohoku (20 bankruptcies, down 37.5%) and Kyushu (38, down 24.0%) saw drastic double-digit year-on-year decreases.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Tellme Club Inc. (Tokyo, bankruptcy) with liabilities of 15,113 million yen.
