- ■There were 664 bankruptcies, marking a 12.4% increase from the previous month, and a slight increase of 1.2% from the same month of the previous year, the first year-on-year increase in five months. Liabilities totaled 115,855 million yen, up 1.3% from the previous month, but down 25.3% from the same month of the previous year. This was the third consecutive month that the figure was lower than the same month of the previous year.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year on year in four of seven industries. Of them, the number of bankruptcies rose year on year in the real estate industry (29 bankruptcies, an increase of 45.0% year on year) for the first time in four months, while the figure increased for the first time in three months year on year in the wholesale industry (108 bankruptcies, up 25.6%) and service industry (147, up 6.5%). Meanwhile, the number of bankruptcies fell year on year for the fifth consecutive month in the construction industry (116 bankruptcies, down 15.9% year on year), and decreased year on year for the first time in four months in the transportation and communication industry (22 bankruptcies, down 15.4%).
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 530 (down 4.2% year on year), lower than the same month of the previous year for the fifth consecutive month. They accounted for 79.8% (down 4.5 points) of all bankruptcies.
- ■In terms of scale, bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 383 (up 8.5% year on year). These made up 57.7% of all bankruptcies, and as ever the trend in which small-scale bankruptcies account for the majority continued. By capitalization, the number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 390, accounting for 58.7% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, although there was a sharp double-digit year-on-year increase in the number of bankruptcies in the two regions of Kanto and Chugoku, the figure fell below the same month of the previous year in five regions including Tohoku and Hokuriku. In Kinki, the figure fell below the same month of the previous year for five consecutive months while it did so for four consecutive months in Kyushu.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Nangoku Kosan Co., Ltd. (Kagoshima, special liquidation) with liabilities of 7,901 million yen.
