Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 4,114 bankruptcies, in the first half of 2016 (4,400 in the previous year, down 6.5% year-on-year), marking the seventh consecutive year of such decline. Looking at the first half 2009, directly after the financial downturn precipitated by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers (7,023 bankruptcies), this is the seventh consecutive year of year-on-year decrease, and 41.4% decrease relative to the first half of 2009.
- ■Liabilities totaled 767,796 million yen, marking the second consecutive first half where the amount fell below 1 trillion yen.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in five of seven industries. However, the construction industry marked its first year-on-year increase in the seven years since the first half of 2009.
- ■A total of 59 China risk bankruptcies were identified (39 in the previous year, up 51.3% year-on-year).
- ■A total of 79 weak yen-related bankruptcies were identified (231 in the previous year, down 65.8% year-on-year).
- ■By region, eight of nine regions experienced year-on-year declines. Of these, Hokuriku (133 bankruptcies, down 19.4% year-on-year) and Chugoku (204 bankruptcies, down 10.5%) marked double digit decreases.
- ■194 post-moratorium bankruptcies were identified (192 in the previous year, up 1.0% year-on-year).
- ■By region, eight of nine regions experienced year-on-year declines. Of these, three regions: Chugoku (159 bankruptcies), Shikoku (69 bankruptcies), and Kyushu (301 bankruptcies) marked large double digit decreases.
- ■By cause, the number of bankruptcies (3,385) comprised 93.2% of the total, and the number of filings via the Civil Rehabilitation Act (140 bankruptcies) broke through 10,000 in April 2016 since its enactment in 2000.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Japan Logitech Joint Cooperative (bankruptcy, April) with liabilities of 16,282 million yen.
