Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 674 bankruptcies, marking a year-on-year decrease of 2.2% and a decrease of 4.3% from the previous month. This was the second consecutive month of year-on-year decline. Liabilities totaled 582,842 million yen, making an increase of 398.6% from the previous month, and a 338.7% year-on-year increase. The amount of liabilities surpassed the same month of the previous year for the second consecutive month, and recorded the largest value this year.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in three of seven industries. In the construction industry, the number of bankruptcies was lower than the same month of the previous year for two consecutive months; in the manufacturing industry, the number was down year-on-year for the first time in two months; and in the real estate industry, the number was lower than the same month of the previous year for the first time in four months. In the service industry, meanwhile, the number of bankruptcies increased for the third consecutive month, compared to the same month of the previous year. And in the retail and wholesale industries the number of bankruptcies exceeded the same month of the previous year for the first time in two months.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 541 (down 8.3% year-on-year), lower than the same month of the previous year for the second consecutive month. They accounted for 80.3% (down 5.3 points) of all bankruptcies.
- ■By scale, there were 418 bankruptcies with liabilities of less than 50 million yen. These made up 62.0% of all bankruptcies, which was the highest level since 2000, and small-scale bankruptcies continued to account for the majority. By capitalization, the total number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 424, accounting for 62.9% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, five of nine regions experienced year-on-year declines. Of these, the number of bankruptcies in Chubu declined 5.5% from the same month of the previous year to 86, and the three regions of Tohoku, Kinki and Chugoku saw a fall in the number of bankruptcies for the second consecutive month compared with the same month the year before. On the other hand, the number of bankruptcies rose year-on-year in three regions, and this number was up in the Kanto region for the first time in three months.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The top level of debt was 500,000 million yen, held by Panasonic Plasma Display Co., Ltd. (Osaka, special liquidation). This was followed by NA Industry Co., Ltd. (Hyogo, special liquidation) with 5,447 million yen, Chiyoda Industry Co., Ltd. (Tochigi, bankruptcy) with 5,442 million yen, and Nanbu Bus Co., Ltd. (Aomori, Civil Rehabilitation Act) with 2,684 million yen.
