Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 704 bankruptcies, up 13.2% from the previous month, but down 4.2% from the same month of the previous year, and marking the first time in three months that the figure was lower than the same month of the previous year. Liabilities totaled 116,904 million yen, marking an increase of 25.5% over the previous month and a year-on-year increase of 23.9%; this was the first year-on-year increase in two months.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in four of seven industries. Of these, two industries marked double digit decreases year-on-year—the transport and communication industry (24 bankruptcies, down 22.6% from the same month of the previous year), and the construction industry (126 bankruptcies, down 14.9%). In addition, three industries saw the number of bankruptcies fall for the first time in three months, compared with the same period of the previous year—the construction industry and the retail industry (146 bankruptcies, down 8.2%), and the wholesale industry (113 bankruptcies, down 2.6%). Meanwhile, the number of bankruptcies in three industries including the service industry (152 bankruptcies, up 2.0%) exceeded the same month of the previous year.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 585, down 7.6% year-on-year, marking the first year-on-year decrease in three months. They accounted for 83.1% (down 3.0 point) of all bankruptcies.
- ■Looking at the scale, there were 380 bankruptcies with debt of less than 50 million yen (down 10.4% from the same month of the previous year), accounting for 54.0% of all bankruptcies (down 3.7 points). Hence, small-scale bankruptcies continued to dominate. By capitalization, the total number of bankruptcies with capital of less than 10 million yen (including self-operated companies) came to 393 (down 9.4%), accounting for 55.8% of all bankruptcies.
- ■By region, six of nine regions experienced year-on-year decreases, including Kanto and Kinki. Of them, the three regions of Kanto, Hokuriku and Shikoku saw a year-on-year decrease for the second consecutive month. Meanwhile, in addition to Chubu, where the number of bankruptcies surpassed the same month of the previous year for the fourth consecutive month, the regions of Hokkaido and Kyushu also saw the figure exceed that of the same month of the previous year.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Repair House Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, bankruptcy) with liabilities of 11,446 million yen.
