- ■There were 688 bankruptcies, marking a decrease of 2.8% from the previous month and a 10.1% year-on-year increase. Though this was the first year-on-year increase in six months, the number remains at a low level. Liabilities totaled 131,777 million yen, marking a 3.0% increase from the previous month and a 36.6% year-on-year increase, the second consecutive month of such increase.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies increased year-on-year in five of seven industries. Of these, the wholesale industry, which marked a year-on-year increase for the first time in seven months, displayed increases in the machine parts and fiber, clothing, and fiber products segments. Additionally, the construction industry marked its first year-on-year increase in three months. On the other hand, the manufacturing industry and the service industry marked year-on-year decreases for the eighth and third consecutive month, respectively.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies comprised 82.8% of the total, down 3.6 points year-on-year.
- ■Bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 400 (up 14.3% year-on-year) and comprised 58.1% (up 2.1 points) of the total, meaning that small scale bankruptcies comprised the majority. By capitalization, the sum of bankruptcies of self-operated companies and those with capital of less than 10 million yen numbers 426 (up 21.7%), comprising 61.9% of the total.
- ■By region, six of nine regions experienced year-on-year increases, including Hokkaido (26 bankruptcies, up 36.8%), Kanto (282 bankruptcies, up 28.2%), and Shikoku (21 bankruptcies, up 200.0%). On the other hand, Tohoku (16 bankruptcies, down 36.0%), Kinki (173 bankruptcies, down 0.6%), and Kyushu (38 bankruptcies, down 36.7%) marked year-on-year decreases.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Eiko Co., Ltd. (Kanagawa, bankruptcy) with liabilities of 20,900 million yen.
