- ■There were 652 bankruptcies, marking an increase of 1.6% over the previous month and a year-on-year decrease of 8.0%. This was the third consecutive month of year-on-year decrease and the third lowest value for May since 2000. Liabilities totaled 106,090 million yen, marking a decrease of 7.2% under the previous month and a year-on-year decrease of 11.0%. In addition to being the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decrease, this marked the lowest value for May since 2000.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in five of seven industries. Of these, the manufacturing industry marked the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decrease, the wholesale industry marked the fourth consecutive month, and the retail and transport and communication industry marked the third consecutive month. However, the construction industry marked the first year-on-year increase in three months.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 555, down 6.7% year-on-year.
- ■Bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 394 (down 0.3% year-on-year) and comprised 60.4% of the total, marking the highest ratio since 2000. By capitalization, the sum of bankruptcies of self-operated companies and those with capitalization of less than 10 million yen numbered 412 (up 0.5%).
- ■By region, four of nine regions experienced year-on-year decreases. Of these, three regions: Kyushu (40 bankruptcies, down 28.6% year-on-year); Kinki (136 bankruptcies, down 22.3%); and Chubu (103 bankruptcies, down 11.2%) marked year-on-year decreases for three consecutive months. However, four regions, including Hokkaido (22 bankruptcies, up 46.7%), marked year-on-year increases.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Shiba Kanzai Co., Ltd. (formerly Samioh Foods Co., Ltd.; Tokyo, special liquidation) with 14,394 million yen. Following behind was Farm Co., Ltd. (Ehime, Civil Rehabilitation Act) with 5,100 million yen.
