Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 642 bankruptcies, marking a year-on-year decrease of 12.1% and the second consecutive month of such decrease. This value is the third lowest for April since 2000. Liabilities totaled 114,368 million yen, marking a large 40.4% year-on-year decrease and the fourth consecutive month of such decrease.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in five of seven industries. Of these, the manufacturing industry (81 bankruptcies, down 26.4% year-on-year) and the wholesale industry (94 bankruptcies, down 21.7%) marked large decreases of greater than 20%. However, the service industry (153 bankruptcies, up 3.4%) and the real estate industry (29 bankruptcies, up 3.6%) both marked increases.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 531, down 13.9% year-on-year.
- ■Bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 368 (down 10.0% year-on-year) and comprised 57.3% of the total, meaning small-scale bankruptcies made up the majority. By capitalization, the sum of bankruptcies of self-operated companies and those with capitalization of less than 10 million yen numbered 378, comprising 58.9% of the total.
- ■By region, eight of nine regions experienced year-on-year decreases. Of these, two regions, Chugoku (13 bankruptcies, down 56.7% year-on-year) and Hokuriku (22 bankruptcies, down 31.3%) marked decreases of greater than 30%. Additionally, the seven regions other than Chugoku and Shikoku experienced year-on-year decreases for two consecutive months.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Japan Logitech Cooperative Association (Tokyo, bankruptcy) with 16,282 million yen, the largest bankruptcy of 2016. Following behind were KD Co., Ltd. (Saitama, special liquidation) with 5,500 million yen and SSL Co., Ltd. (Hyogo, special liquidation) with 3,400 million yen.
