Highlight and Outstanding Feature
- ■There were 739 bankruptcies, marking a year-on-year decrease of 12.8%, the first decrease in two months and the fourth-lowest level for March since 2000. Liabilities totaled 156,793 million yen, a year-on-year decrease of 30.0% and the third consecutive month of such decrease.
- ■By industry, the number of bankruptcies decreased year-on-year in all seven industries. Of these, two industries, the transportation/telecommunication and real estate industries, marked large double digit decreases of greater than 30%. Additionally, the construction industry (144 bankruptcies, down 7.7% year-on-year), which had year-on-year increases for two consecutive months, marked the first decrease in three months.
- ■In terms of primary cause, recession-induced bankruptcies numbered 615, down 9.7% year-on-year.
- ■Bankruptcies totaling less than 50 million yen numbered 397 (down 10.4% year-on-year) and comprised 53.7% of the total. By capitalization, those with capital of 100 million yen or higher comprised 1.5% of the total, marking the first span of three months of consecutive increase in six years and 11 months.
- ■By region, eight of nine regions experienced year-on-year declines. Of these, six regions marked double-digit year-on-year decreases, including Shikoku (13 bankruptcies), which experienced a large year-on-year decrease of 48.0%, and Hokkaido (22 bankruptcies, down 26.7%), However, Chugoku (37 bankruptcies, up 5.7%) was the only region marking a year-on-year increase.
- ■There were no bankruptcies of listed companies.
- ■The largest amount of liabilities was posted by Kankyu Real Estate Co., Ltd. (Osaka, bankruptcy) with liabilities of 14,000 million yen. Following was Nisshoku Co., Ltd. (Osaka, bankruptcy).
